25 Holiday Records: 21: A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi Trio

We're counting down to Christmas Day with a list of 25 records we have in the shop at Royal Cat Records! Why? Because vinyl rules!

Our next record is one of the greatest Xmas records ever!

#21

A Charlie Brown Christmas
by Vince Guaraldi Trio
Fantasy
f8431
(green vinyl)

It's hard to believe but there was a time when this record was not as ubiquitous as it is now. Even ten years ago, we remember reminiscing about the soundtrack to this beloved tv special. It seemed it was the only Christmas music many of our friends could stand, in part because it was rarely played on the radio. That situation has changed, and Vince Guaraldi's music is basically everyone's holiday soundtrack these days. The record became more common in the cd era but it is back in vinyl form with a vengeance today, with a gorgeous green vinyl version being the most plentiful. (We have a few left in the shop currently.)

For a collection of tracks that were cobbled together in a hurry and meant to be seen and heard once and then forgotten, this record has really proven to have staying power. One of the best post-WWII Christmas-themed compositions, for sure.

There was a great article in Pitchfork this week about the history of the record: "the soundtrack, composed by jazz piano impresario Vince Guaraldi along with Fred Marshall on double bass and the great Jerry Granellion drums. “We did the music in a day and a half, two days,” Granelli tells me. “That’s just how you recorded records back then.” These days, it’s quite possibly the most ubiquitous and universally lauded holiday album out there, not to mention the gateway for generations of children who would go onto explore the bottomless chasm of the jazz idiom. Yet for the network suits expecting some Burl Ives-type maximalism, Guaraldi's quaint score was deemed too weird and dark, even though the soundtrack—released on the Fantasy label right around the time the special aired on TV—received rave reviews"

Royal Cat Records Grand Opening is This Saturday!

Here's the press release for the big opening this Saturday:

New Record Store Announces Grand Opening in Downtown Guelph

Guelph, ON, April 19, 2014  --Royal Cat Records announces its Grand Opening with a live performance by Chadillac on Saturday, April 19th. (Record Store Day)

Vinyl records are having a rebirth and local music lovers and shop owners Kara and Bryan Munn are giving Guelph a new space to experience the pleasures of digging through new releases and classic albums. They are opening a new record shop inside their vintage clothing store Meow, located in the heart of downtown.

Royal Cat Records, billing itself as "the big little record shop," will hold its official grand opening on Saturday, April 19, 11am to 7pm at 10 Carden St, Guelph, N1H 3A2 (downstairs). The opening will feature performances by the legendary Chadillac (of Sensi Boyz and Cat People fame), spinning tunes throughout the day.

Royal Cat Records is not only a space to find a rare selection of new and vintage vinyl, but also will host performances by bands and promote local musicians with record launches. "We've already hosted local trio From a Shadowy Planet as part of the recent Kazoo! Festival and hope to have many more events at our shop!" explains owner Kara Munn. "The "Royal" in Royal Cat Records is a tribute to Guelph, the Royal City, and we want to help promote local music not just by selling records but by giving musicians an intimate space to interact with their audience."

Royal Cat Records is a celebration of all things vinyl, giving both the casual music fan and hard-core collector something to enjoy. As owner Bryan Munn acknowledges, "We are record collectors ourselves and have always played and sold records in our store, but now we have this dedicated space with big bins full of records. We are really trying to provide something for everyone here: rock, jazz, hip hop, blues, country, and more!" The store gets new releases and classic reissues in every week and also buys collections of vintage vinyl from local people looking to downsize.

Royal Cat Records first opened its doors in March, and has been stocking its shelves with everything from rare Led Zeppelin records, as well as new Canadian and U.S. releases ever since. Kara says that the response to the store has been "super positive" so far. "Guelph is a music town and people really love and appreciate all genres of music here. It's really encouraging!"
