25 Holiday Records: 13 : A Very Special Christmas

We're counting down to Christmas Day with a list of 25 records we have in the shop at Royal Cat Records! Why? Because vinyl rules!

Our next record is a single decade compressed in one juicy slab of vinyl!!

#13

A Very Special Christmas
by Various
A&M Records ‎– SP-3911
1987

This is the first in a series of records put out to benefit the Special Olympics, with the profits being donated by the performers. Can you imagine a more 80s record than this? A Keith Haring sleeve design covers a collection of songs by the biggest pop stars of the decade, including Madonna, Sting, U2, Run-DMC, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams and more more more!

After all, what says Christmas more than these guys putting aside their egos for a good cause?

The whole thing has a great nostalgic charm to it, and some of the tracks have become classics, especially Run-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis". We also like Annie Lennox's awesome voice and the sparkling Dave Stewart production on The Eurythmics' "Winter Wonderland" as well as the raspy joyous grunting Springsteen track, "Merry Christmas, Baby". Pure gold! It's really a good record!

You can listen to samples on the Special Olympics website or check out some of these great videos:
