25 Holiday Records: 17: Dave Brubeck Christmas

We're counting down to Christmas Day with a list of 25 records we have in the shop at Royal Cat Records! Why? Because vinyl rules!

Our next record is a late-20th Century modern jazz holiday classic!

#18

A Dave Brubeck Christmas

A classic Xmas record of jazz piano? No, it's not Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas. It's The Brube!  Dave Brubeck died last year but he left us one final gift: this wonderful record. Although released in 1996, it only came out on vinyl in 2014, mastered by Paul Blakemore at CMG Mastering and it sounds great. So warm! So sharp!

From critic Ken Dryden:

Dave Brubeck covers a host of favorite carols on this solo outing. His chime-like "Joy to the World" and striding "Winter Wonderland" are treasures. His festive opening version of "Jingle Bells" contrasts with the weary version signaling the end of an evening's festivities; anyone who has ever worked a holiday party will relate to it. His originals include the delightful "Run, Run, Run to Bethlehem" and the meditative "To Us Is Given." This is a Christmas CD worth repeated hearings.

The only time we will ever link to a Fox News clip:
